Zanzibar is challenging to tour and relies mostly on expensive taxis. Therefore we found it far better to stay central in the island in the fabulous Stonetown capital. The best 'traditional' hotel by a mile is the historic Tembo House Hotel. Situated on the coast with private beach, two swimming pools and views of the small coastal boats to die for. Rooms were spacious and cleaned each day, Lots of choice at Buffet style breakfast. Downside was that the hotel does not sell any Alcohol but all the bars and hotels just 2-minutes walk away do - the terraced South Africa Fish Market restaurant which overlooks the sea has ambient chill music and excellent food. The Tembo House restaurant meals are not recommended and the staff are very noisy even at 2am in the morning which spoils it.

Excellent place to stay in Stonetown Zanzibar. Staff are very friendly, polite and welcoming. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Would definitely stay there again!

It is arguably the best place I’ve stayed. The staff were amazing. The location is quite lovely and the menu offers different options. I love it!
