Pleasantly Surprised

Posted 14 Nov 2018 on Hotels
I saw some negative reviews on this hotel so I was reluctant to book. However I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very nice casino/hotel. Room was very clean and spacious. Opened curtains and got a full view of the casino floor. Staff was very very friendly and each shift had an english speaker. The food was excellent. Free shuttle ride back to Thailand. Very nice stay. Only problem was the bed. The bed was felt like I was sleeping on wood with metal springs poking me. Could not sleep on it and left the hotel early because of it. Other than that, excellent.

Dirty Smoky Old Border Casino with a Hotel

Posted 26 Aug 2017 on Hotels
This place is a large border town 24 hour casino complex with a 2 story hotel above it. Half of the rooms have their only windows facing the gaming floor. The casino recently changed hands so maybe they will renovate it. They were renovating the rooms while I was there (flat screen TVs, mini fridges, hot water kettles, and WiFi). The WiFi did have some intrusive program that blocked streaming and torrents as well as access to many international sites. The restaurants, bar, and breakfast were not as depicted. There was no live entertainment the nights I stayed there. They did have a gym, massage/spa, and karaoke room with girls. I was told it was 3000 Thai baht for one of the girls to sit with a guest for an hour. The breakfast was a typical Asian style hotel buffet. I asked about the other food and was told it would take a long time and to order room service. As for the casino part of the hotel I didn't try as it is not really my thing and it was too smoky. It didn't look impressive like Vegas, Macau, or Phnom Phen so it would probably be disappointing if you were serious. The service was unusually good and included bellman, check in, check out, manager, and everyone else. Language barriers existed with most staff but the manager did speak very good English. On a final note the hotel is about 3 KM from the friendship bridge, 5 KM to town, and 8 KM to the colonial plaza. You will need your own transportation or be relying on taxis and tuk tuks.

2 star hotel masquerading as a 4!

Posted 18 May 2017 on Hotels
This is no more than a 2 star hotel. It was clean and breakfast had a choice but not of a great standard. The rooms were okay but nothing to write home about. The whole ambience is rather dingy due to the casino being in permanent darkness, even the curtains were drawn n the breakfast room. However, my lasting memory will be that of the staff, while they were helpful and polite when needed they looked completely bored and totally fed up with life, especially those in the casino. Any interaction with staff at reception, cafe etc was meet with shock that someone should be talking with them, then confusion as they did not know how to react. Working conditions and pay of staff I would suspect is not good and my room looked onto what appeared to be workers quarters. I felt so sorry for the predominantly young work force who seem to have settled for what appears to be a miserable existence. This feeling is transferred to the guests. With not much choice in Suvvanakhet this hotel seems to be the only choice. There is nowhere within walking distance from the hotel to go to. Wifi in room was terrible until we got a router fitted. We were told 20 min then had to call again twice before we managed to get it!
