Excellent stay, woke up overlooking the beautiful bay. Peter and Katalina were excellent hosts, making sure that our stay was memorable one.

This property is a room in a converted basement The steep stairs going down to the room would not be good for those with mobility issues. The foliage has not been trimmed and so the view is obstructed. There is smoking allowed on the property and the smoking drifted into our room and triggered my husband’s asthma.
We felt this room was overpriced and the website is misleading when it is called a “lodge.”

On arrival, these guests, David and Heather did not look very happy. Happy people love the Tarltons Lodge experience. Most guests come to Tarltons Lodge for the breathtaking ocean view and their own private spa, neither of which were mentioned in this demeaning review. Their remarks are distorted and, in some cases, untrue. There is no basement at Tarltons Lodge. Our rooms are on the first floor overlooking the ocean. The stairs are built to code, each with handrails for safety. Smoking is not allowed on the property except in a designated area, at the front of the house facing the parking and road, where the smoke cannot drift into the guest rooms. These guests stayed with us at the height of the summer season, when you have to book early to reserve a room and guests line up to rent our rooms. In any holiday destination in the world, you won’t get a breathtaking ocean view with your own private spa without paying a little extra. Our prices are on par with the other Bay of Islands, ocean-view waterfront properties.Our goal is Happy Guests.

The host and hostess were great. It is important for guests to know these rooms are converted basement or lower floor rooms of a home. We felt the listing was misleading when it was called a “lodge.“
The bathroom lacked a few amenities as in enough shampoo and conditioner for two people and it would’ve been nice to have lotions provided.
We would have appreciated an iron.
An issue for us was cigarette smoking that was allowed on the property. My husband’s asthma was triggered from the cigarette smoking that was allowed in the front of the house which drifted into our room and caused us a problem.
There are narrow stairs that lead down to the room and would be difficult for some who may have mobility issues.
There is a trip hazard in the bathroom which the host pointed out to us. That needs to be remedied.

Very difficult to say anything that hasn't already been said. The place is amazing, the view is amazing and Peter and Katarina are fabulous hosts who made us feel so welcome.

Great stay. Owners are lovely, property immaculate and really private. Very close to Paihia township, I would by far prefer to stay here than at one of the many motels/hotels in Paihia.
