Nice hotel close to sightseeing attractions

Posted 4 Feb 2018
Pros: The friendliness of the staff.
Cons: it gets cold here, and these Chinese hotels often have inadequate heating systems. The air conditioner has a dual function.
Location: Next to the Bell Tower and a Taoist Temple, which modern buildings are built around, yet does not detract the beauty of Song dynasty architecture.
This is the 2nd time I have stayed at this hotel. One thing that those who want to stay in the cheaper Chinese hotels is that the Chinese worry about safety and security of non-Chinese people, so they restrict such hotels to Chinese people only. This is more prevalent in N. China, than in the South, as it is closer to Beijing, seat of central government. However, after many years I discovered that "foreigners" can still stay at this kind of hotel without worry of safety and security just by booking through Expedia. Do not expect to walk off the street and into the hotel and get a room. I tried this on my last visit and it was suggested that I go to a "foreigner approved hotel" which is more expensive. However, being my 3rd trip to Kaifeng, I thought to book via Expedia again, and there was no inkling of objection by the staff. They are efficient and polite and it is well worth the cost for those on a budget, though the amenities are not the same as the more expensive places.
