Great Location. Small room was small with shower and toilet but this was expected as we saw it from the photos prior to booking. Service great. Lovely place to stay.

Great dinners and friendly service
Posted 9 Jan 2018 on HotelsBest thing about Tipi and Bob's was the really excellent cuisine available in the bar/restaurant at dinner time eg poached gurnard and prawns with rice and vegetables, or fillet steak with scallops. The service was good, and friendly.
Meals were a bit expensive (including continental breakfast at $20), but that appeared to be a feature of island life as presumably food has to be brought over from the mainland. Alcohol reasonably priced however.
My room was very small (and therefore cheaper) and there was no space for an armchair. For much of the time the weather was stormy, which was unfortunate, so I spent a lot of time lying on the bed reading, or watching TV.
A must, if staying on Great Barrier Island, is to pre-arrange a rental car. Bringing one on the ferry is very expensive, and you don't want to get stuck in the situation where all rental cars on the island are in use. There is no regular public transport such as buses or taxis, and everything you want to see is a car-drive away.
Communication on the island is also hampered by the lack of good mobile phone coverage, which can be frustrating. Bring plenty of cash too. The rental car company I dealt with did not offer EFTPOS or credit card facilities!
Bring a phone charger cable that'll plug into a USB port - Great Barrier is off-grid, so the power available is from a mixture of solar panels and generators. There were no power plugs in my room, but there were USB outlets for phone charging.
