Great location at foot of castle

Posted 15 Jun 2016 on Travelocity
Pros: Hotel had the feel of a boutique hotel. Very homey and quiet at night. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Very reasonable rate.
Cons: Nothing
Location: Castle is just up the hill, Cherry Restaurant in town had great pasta, see the camera obscura at Lyceum (1 of only 2 instruments left), climb minaret.
Cozy hotel with impeccably clean rooms. Nice breakfast to start the day. The manager, Gabor, was anxious to meet every need and was willing to please. Location is at the foot of the castle in conveniently located to all the sites. The town is easily walkable and people are super friendly. Lots of great restaurants.

Nice Place

Posted 25 Feb 2015 on Hotels
The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The room was fine except for the old, stained linens on the bed. The hotel is near most of the sites in Eger; not far from the main square, the minaret and the castle. The breakfast was continental, but certainly enough food and options. The wifi worked well. This is not a fancy hotel and it is not supposed to be. If you are looking for something basic then this place will work.

Nice little hotel near the castle

We loved it there. Rooms are comfortable and the location couldn't be better, everything is just a few steps away. Be sure to taste local wine and there is one restaurant in the other hotel just under the castle rated one of the top 10 restaurants in Hungary.

Extremely Pleasant

The whole town is undergoing a massive overhaul and when I return to see the results I will most certainly angle to stay at the Vàrkapu. PS. Be ready for church bells ringing through the night.

Nice hotel, could do with some finishing touches

Posted 15 Jun 2011
Positives: Great location right near the busy centre of Eger, in fact we were closer than we realised initially. The male receptionist met us at the door, helped us to no end - up the very minute we left, making calls on our behalf, gathering extra information about our journey. The room was very nice, although not all of them had air conditioning, we were able to get a room that had it. Parts of the hotel look new and our room was clean and comfortable. Negatives: The breakfast was ok on the first day but much poorer on the second. There needs to be more attention to detail, for example, the cereal was very stale, and none of the salts worked, they had rice in them but even this old trick made no difference as the breakfast room is in an underground room, there was no pepper. I don't mind a basic breakfast but each item needs to be fresh and the settings checked. consider eating out.
