We needed a reasonably priced overnight stay on our way back from Scotland. The Crown & Mitre in Carlisle was offering a discount so we went for it. Little did we know what lay ahead. Carlisle is not a n attractive city and is made up of a run down centre with many closed up premises. The hotel is right in the centre and actually looks architecturally quite striking from the front and the reception area is retro grand. Sadly our room in the attached building at the rear was dated and in desperate need of a refurb. I should have known when we were allocated room 101 that things wouldn’t go well! There was a wedding function that evening and several guests stood in the rear car park smoking and shouting all evening. At midnight we phoned reception requesting a member of staff have a word with these people. The noise continued until 1pm. I would say if you are thinking of booking this hotel, make sure there’s no wedding on. No doubt this is why a discount was offered even though it was still an expensive stay with little or no sleep.

Although I only stayed here for one night I will definitely be back. It left quite an impression and is just the right side of posh and very reasonable in terms of price per night, with free access to the pool. We had a twin room on the front of the hotel's main building overlooking the main shopping drag in Carlisle, and although it was a Monday night we expected it to still be slightly noisy, however, we didn't hear a peep the entire night. It was perfectly quiet outside and in the hotel except for a few guests the following morning banging doors which is of no fault of the hotel itself. The internet was surprisingly quick for it being complimentary - a massive improvement on the internet at premier inn. My only real complaint was that the usb slot to charge items on the bedside table did not work, therefore, I had to plug the item in way across the room at a plug that worked. This didn't really matter at that time, however, I watch shows and read on my tablet in bed and if it had had a low battery and needed charging I would've been very annoyed that I wouldn't be able to charge it as I lay in bed. We enjoyed sitting in the lounge downstairs so much that we spent most of the following day there drinking pots of tea from the cafe after checking out and before heading home. Peaceful, clean and ideal location for anyone staying in Carlisle. If you don't mind foregoing modern furnishings then give this hotel a go. It will be my first choice whenever I stay in Carlisle.

Beautiful building in the centre of town. Clean and comfortable but a little dated. Vehicle access was rather difficult due to the town’s roads.

We were looking forward to our stay at the George because of reviews and it's proximity to the Wall trail. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the actual condition of the rooms and the staff were less than friendly. There is no elevator so make sure your bag is not too heavy to haul up a couple of.flights. we spent the first few minutes in our room mashing flying insects of the mosquito variety. The pool was recently opened and yet the mold on the tiles and algae on the roof hadn't been cleaned off yet. Also, breakfast may or may not be included in the rate.no one mentioned this on check in so we asked one of the staff when we saw the buffet. Food was bland. They had a large.party coming I so we were told we had to hurry and order our dinner before the group arrived. We were done well before anyone else showed up. All in all it's cheap and you get what you pay for.
