Having previously lived in the area The Quay Mill has a luxury reputation which is reflected in it pricing. We were back visiting for a wedding a decided to ‘Treat’ ourselves with a 2 night stay. Whilst the grounds are beautiful and the leisure facilities are good (Although the jacuzzi was out of order), we found overall our stay fell below our expectations. The pillows in our room were terrible and the replacements that eventually arrived from housekeeping were not much better. return had accessed the room to replace the pillows but didn’t top up tea/coffee or replace dirty cups. We paid for breakfast our first morning, but it was very chaotic with hot breakfast orders being muddled between tables (having waited a long while for it). At no point were we checked on by waiting staff -offered additional drinks etc. And the continental buffet was not being topped up (not apple or orange juice topped up in the hour we were there). So decided to head to The Pantry, nearby in Newmarket the following morning. None of these things are deal breakers and would have been written off had we been staying at a budget chain. Sadly I don’t think we would return for the price we paid.

The staff members, from reception to dining, were friendly but completely untrained and inept in customer service. Example: when we arrived early and asked to check in, we were told we were too early. There was no explanation for when we might be able to check in. At the bar-area restaurant there was haphazard table service. We had to keep asking for cutlery, serviettes, etc. The property itself needs upgrading, and cleanliness was not where it should be. When I told reception that our room was clean but hadn’t been vacuumed, there was very little response. The spa was similarly average. The flotation treatment was relaxing (it felt like lying still in an inflated hammock with an eye pillow on) but there was next to no massage, so I felt the description was misleading. When this was raised, there was no answer from staff. The staff all seem apathetic, like they’re just barely coping, and the lack of management can really be felt.

The lunch, dinner and breakfast at this hotel could not be faulted. A varied menu is available and the food was delicious. The Water Mill restaurant is a charming location for an intimate lunch or romantic dinner. The Bar Manager, Peter Gebura was charming and went out of his way to make us feel both welcome and well attended. However, some areas of the hotel are in need of both maintenance and updating. Further attention should also be paid to room cleaning. In our case, the walk-in shower should have received more work. The hotel was by no means busy during our visit and there therefore did not appear any excuse for not cleaning the shower room properly.
