"Although the decor and building felt a bit dated - lots of dark wood and patterned carpets - it was very clean and the staff were brilliantly friendly - remembering our names to greet us in the morning. The breakfast was straightforward and tasty and arrived quickly - loved the fact that there was cake on the breakfast buffet! It was quiet at night too. Had to air the room as there was condensation on the inside of the sash windows but wondered if that was because it wasn't possible to double-glaze them. It was plenty warm enough in chilly March and had a lovely warm shower and big fluffy towels. The room itself didn't have a lot of space for storage, just a small slightly musty cupboard which we didn't use in the end. It would have been nice to have some herbal tea and biscuits in the room. I think it's generally quite expensive to stay in the lakes as this was more than we would normally pay to stay but the location was excellent for walking and Ambleside itself. "

"When we arrived the reception staff was so lovely. We were travelling with my 10 month old son and they were so kind and attentive to him. It was so appreciated. The room was great, nice big bed and a cot for my baby. I like that the shower was separate from the bath too. I used the spa. Sauna and steam room are great and the changing rooms were clean and well equipped "

"It was our second stay at the Victorian and it won’t be our last. The room we had was very spacious and most definitely ‘dog friendly’. Our bed was comfortable and the breakfast experience was very pleasant with good quality food. Staff were very attentive and helped enhance our stay."

"We had a deluxe room with a patio. The room was large, but very dated and with stains and scuffs throughout. The patio was private (we weren't aware of that) so our bedroom opens up directly onto a shared patio which meant we couldnt have our curtains open to admire the view. The coffee machine was missing from our room as well. The spa was nice, but very small. It was overcrowded when we went with people queuing inside the spa for beds / steam room, and also queuing to access the spa. We had breakfast which was very nice and the restaurant is a nice setting. Grasmere itself is lovely and ideally located. Staff very kind and professional "

"The bar was just about the cosiest bar that I've ever been in, small but plenty of overspill rooms that each had a fire. The staff were all really friendly and helpful, I've just had a hip operation and a particularly helpful Polish lady helped me up and downstairs with cases."
