Where to stay in Colon

Find the best Colon areas and neighborhoods for the activities you enjoy most.

Barrio Sur

Barrio Sur reveals Panama's Afro-Caribbean soul through weathered colonial buildings painted in faded pastels. Caribbean wooden balconies overlook narrow cobblestone streets where the aroma of fried plantains fills the air. West Indian influences shine through local customs, architecture, and the rhythms of reggae and calypso. This historic district offers glimpses into Colón's significance during the Panama Canal construction era. Budget-friendly guesthouses and family-run eateries serving authentic rice and beans make exploration affordable. The neighborhood's compact layout means most attractions are just a short walk away.

Barrio Norte

Experience the rich Afro-Caribbean heritage of Barrio Norte in Colón. This authentic cultural enclave offers a genuine glimpse into everyday Panamanian life with its colorful concrete houses and lively community atmosphere. Travelers can observe locals chatting on porches and hear Caribbean music drifting through narrow streets. Budget-conscious visitors will appreciate the affordable family-run guesthouses and traditional comedores serving flavorful Caribbean-influenced dishes. While tourist infrastructure is minimal, the neighborhood provides easy access to Limon Bay and Monument to Christopher Columbus. The close-knit community welcomes respectful travelers seeking authentic cultural exchange beyond Panama City's tourist zones.

Cristobal

This historic port neighborhood offers a fascinating glimpse into Panama's maritime heritage at the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal. Watch massive ships navigate the impressive Gatun Locks while strolling along the waterfront promenade. Colonial architecture tells the story of American canal construction throughout Cristobal. The Colon Free Zone beckons shoppers with duty-free electronics and designer goods just minutes away. Local eateries serve Caribbean-influenced Panamanian seafood dishes that reflect the area's diverse cultural influences. Though primarily a working port, Cristobal rewards visitors with authentic maritime experiences and sweeping harbor views.

Gamboa Rainforest Reserve

Gamboa Rainforest Reserve

10/10 Excellent
"We recently stayed at the Gamboa Rainforest Reserve, and the hotel is ideally located right in the heart of the rainforest. There are plenty of activities available, and you can easily sign up for tours and excursions during your stay. The staff were excellent. We had originally booked three nights but decided to shorten our stay to two nights, and the hotel accommodated the change without any issues. The food and service at the restaurants were exceptional. The property is definitely showing its age, although the common areas appear to have been refurbished recently. The rooms, however, are in need of updating, particularly the bathrooms. We experienced an issue with rust falling from the shower door into the shower area every day, which was disappointing. We also tried several of the tours offered by the resort, including the aerial tram and Lake Gatun boat ride. Both were excellent and very well organized, with knowledgeable and friendly tour guides who made the experiences especially enjoyable. Overall, the location, staff, dining, and excursions were highlights of our stay. With some updates to the rooms and bathrooms, the property could be an even better experience."
