Whether you come for a short trip or stay for a week, Tokyo is the sort of place that will remain in your memory for a long time.

This is an area of Tokyo that 8,300,000 people reside in.

There are just a handful of destinations in the world that are truly world-class and Tokyo is one of them because of attractions such as Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Sky Tree. It is also known around the world for the Sensoji Temple and Tokyo Imperial Palace.

Get active with the kids at Joypolis and Hanayashiki Amusement Park. Namco Namja Town and Toshimaen Amusement Park are also worth a visit if the little ones aren't too worn out.

Tokyo Sea Life Park and Sunshine Aquarium are renowned for their collection of slippery and slimy sea critters. Shinagawa Aquarium and Sumida Aquarium are some more informative establishments.

If your children enjoy seeing magnificent mamals and leathery lizards, stop at the Ueno Zoo or the Machida Squirrel Garden. The Edogawa Natural Zoo and the Inokashira Park Zoo also provide valuable opportunities for your youngsters to learn about the world's ecosystems.

Beer expert or not, you should head out to the Suntory Brewery Musashino Factory for a look behind the scenes. Here you can watch the brewers at work as they convert the malt, hops, water and yeast into a delicious finished brew.

Would you like to learn about some of the local plant species? Stop by the Koishikawa Korakuen Garden or the Chinzan-so Garden. Many tourists also enjoy inspecting the collections at the Yatsu Rose Garden and the Institute for Nature Study.

When the weather is fine, grab some lunch and find a quiet corner at one of the pleasant green spaces, such as Yoyogi Park and Ueno Park. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and the East Garden are two more excellent places to while away a lazy afternoon over a good book.

Got an extra day and you aren't quite sure where to go? The staff at Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center are well equipped to help point you in the right direction. You will be able to get your hands on additional brochures and maps at Okutama Visitor Center and marunouchi cafe SEEK.

To admire scenic views of natural landscapes and tumbling water, make the trip over to Hossawa Falls.

Skim some stones, listen to the birdsong and have a bite to eat at Lake Okutama.

Need to get away from the noise of the city? Head out on an adventure to Mount Takao and Kasai Rinkai Park. Hyogo Island Park and Oedo Onsen Monogatari Hot Springs are also highly recommended by nature enthusiasts.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the Japanese Sword Museum offer a range of collections that are bound to keep you captivated. Also worth considering are the Kanto Earthquake Memorial Museum and the Taiko Drum Museum.

Read stories of brave captains and sailors at the Museum of Maritime Science, the premier nautical history museum in the region.

Step inside the science world for a couple of hours and make your way to the Tokyo National Science Museum or the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. The Nezu Art Museum and the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art are also well worth a browse if you can squeeze them in.

History lovers can explore the past at the Tokyo National Museum and the Edo-Tokyo Museum. The Mitsui Memorial Museum and the Shitamachi Museum are also respected choices.

National Diet Building and the Waseda University are certainly worth paying a visit to, even if you're not a passionate history buff. You might also like to snap some photos at the Keio University and Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery.

Leave time to swing by Nijubashi Bridge and Kachidoki Bridge, a couple of majestic structures that arc their ways across the city's waterways. Don't leave before you see another great example of engineering brilliance, Hijiribashi Bridge.

Featuring striking architecture and leafy gardens, the palatial abodes here are an impressive sight. You'll feel like you've found your way into the pages of a fairytale upon entering Imperial Palace Garden and Akasaka Palace.

Whether you're spiritual or not, you'll be sure to enjoy a trip to Meiji Jingu Shrine and Yasukuni Shrine. You could also check for guided tours around the Asakusa Shrine and St. Mary's Cathedral.

Tokyo's most celebrated sights sometimes overshadow its less renowned, yet equally fascinating attractions. Rainbow Bridge and the National Art Center Tokyo might be just what you're after. Also, consider seeing the Tokyo National Diet Library and Nakamise Arcade if you have time.
