One of Tokyo’s city centers welcomes you into a world of surprises, with lively commercial avenues lined by intriguing entertainment and augmented reality hubs.

Anime, cosplay and other futuristic Japanese customs are celebrated in the lively district of Ikebukuro. Rising from its core is the Sunshine City compound, which provides a range of intriguing and otherworldly exhibits and experiences. Get a sense of modern-day Japan with a trip to the shopping kiosks and stores.

Immerse yourself in the district’s thriving otaku culture, which centers on a passion for online and virtual worlds. Drawings of popular anime cartoon characters and digital representations are draped across the sides of the market stalls and shops.

Get close to these imaginary figures in Namco Namjatown in the Sunshine City complex. Wander through its haunted house area and play a range of video games. On the top floors of the complex is the Sunshine Aquarium, with penguin, pelican and jellyfish exhibits. Admire the wonderful views of Tokyo’s skyline from its rooftop terrace.

In the western corner of Sunshine City rises the SKY CIRCUS Sunshine 60 Observatory, whose observation platform has a range of fun features. Walk along the transparent glass tiles and enjoy virtual reality experiences in this high-tech exhibit looking down on Tokyo.

Back on the ground, stroll along the busy shopping avenues and stop at the stores selling all types of souvenirs. The quarter is known for its boutiques specializing in high-end cameras.

Visit Ikebukuro’s more traditional highlights including the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre and the Ancient Orient Museum. The latter sheds light on Ancient Egypt and the surrounding area. Wander through the leafy campus of the Rikkyo University and mingle with the students.

The district of Ikebukuro lies in the heart of Toshima, a little north of central Tokyo. Arrive via train at the Ikebukuro railway station in the northwestern corner of the Yamanote Line and get around the surrounding area by tram. Visit other nearby neighborhoods such as Minamicho, Mejiro and Otsuka.

Ikebukuro offers a glimpse of the future, with interactive exhibits on virtual and augmented reality.
