Almere is a young city in the province of Flevoland and is close to Amsterdam.
Almere wasn’t established until 1975, which is why it doesn't have a lot of history. But in this short time the place has grown into a bustling city of 200,000 inhabitants with a lot of things to do. For example, Stadslandgoed de Kemphaan. This lovely country estate is surrounded by woods and is home to a number of farm animals. There’s a restaurant and a playground, and something fun is organised every Sunday from Easter to October.
Nature lovers will enjoy Natuurbelevingcentrum de Oostvaarders. Stop at one of the numerous look-outs and take in a spectacular panoramic view of this beautiful nature reserve. Spot birds or other animals with your own binoculars or one of the telescopes that are available at the look-outs. You can also watch documentaries on the Oostvaardersplassen. From here you can go on to Schaapskooi Vroege Vogelbos. After you've explored the sheepfold, take the kids to the playground before walking in the woods and recharging your batteries at the tea house.
If you’d like a more active way of enjoying the beautiful landscape, why not go on one or more of the cycling tours around Almere? Cycle along the Naardermeer, for example, a natural habitat so unique that it enjoys international protection. It’s also a great place to spot rare birds. Continue cycling towards Eemland and take in the expansiveness and the beauty of the Dutch polder landscape.
Almere is not far from Amsterdam, making it easy to pop into the capital for a day of sightseeing. You could also pop over to the fortified island of Pampus in the IJmeer. Explore the fort on your own or with a guide and find out how the soldiers worked and lived here a hundred years ago.
