Travel Guide

Capoliveri

Experience the medieval charm of this hillside town as you explore its winding alleys lined with artisans’ workshops, restaurants and cellar doors.

Capoliveri is a quaint little commune perched high in the hills of Elba Island. Explore the township’s historic quarter, where the crumbling ruins of imposing forts serve as a reminder of medieval sea battles and pirate attacks. Stroll down twisting cobblestone alleys, which lead to beautiful old churches and enchanting piazzas. Join the locals and celebrate the season’s grape harvest with a glass of fine Capoliveri wine.

The township is divided into four main sections. Wander around the historic ramparts of the Baluardo (the Bulwark) and take photos of the houses nestled into the valley of il Fosso (the Ditch). Gaze up at the imposing old la Torre (the Tower) and walk within the walls of la Fortezza (the Fortress). As you explore the meandering medieval alleys, you’ll find small archways known as chiassi. Craft workshops and artisans’ studios are tucked into these quaint covered alleys. Pick up unique handcrafted keepsakes and boutique gifts.

Check out some of Capoliveri’s historic treasures. The medieval Pisans fortified the old city against attacks by the Saracen pirates. You can see the fortified walls of the ruined San Michele Church, a Romanesque beauty dating back to the 1300s.

If you visit in September, you can experience the ancient rivalry between the town’s four districts at the Festa dell’Uva (Grape Festival). Watch as the districts go head-to-head with traditional choreographed dances and celebrations. Taste delicious wines from the revered vineyards described by the Romans as Colle di Libero, or “sacred to Bacchus.”

Along Capoliveri’s coastline, you’ll find a series of pretty inlets and bays, where tiny fishing villages are interspersed with glamorous resorts. Find wild beaches, such as Laconella and Remaiolo, or check out the busier strands, including Lacona, Lido and Naregno.

Capoliveri is a 30-minute drive southeast from the harbor town of Portoferraio. It is accessible by bus and car. Make the most of the free shuttle bus service that operates between the town’s historic sites in the summer months.

From the top of Mount Calamita to the remote beaches of the Calamita Promontory, you’ll find remarkable beauty in Capoliveri.
