"My spouse and I had a fantastic stay at Hotel Izukyu! I'm already planning to come back later in the summer. My Japanese is limited so we really appreciated the staff doing their best to explain policies in English. We stayed in a Japanese style room, it was huge and had everything we needed and more - and the view of the ocean was fantastic! We also took advantage of the private onsen, highly recommend. "Wonderful hotel right on the water in Shimoda. Easy to walk down to the onsite pool and nearby bay. Short drive (or longer walk) to popular beaches. Onsite restaurant is very traditional. Staff are friendly and helpful. "

"Nice traditional rooms - clean and good-sized. Loved the onsen/bath! Right on an easy bus route 3 stops /6 minutes from Shimoda station and another 5 stops/10 mins or so to Shirahama

. Cons - no wi-fi in rooms. Staff not very welcoming or friendly. There’s a Jonathon's family restaurant and a 7-11 but other than that very limited dining options within walking distance but Shimoda is very sleepy so without a car your options are pretty limited unless staying in the ‘city’ "
