Eype's Mouth Country Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"We last stayed here sometime in the 1980s and it was a tad dismal: things have changed - a lot! Made very welcome by the reception staff, room quite small, but perfectly clean and well appointed, with a couple of cake morsel treats together with a hand written card to welcome us, which was a very nice touch. We were in the middle of heatwave, so it was a bonus to find a very efficient fan in the wardrobe: tea and coffee-making facilities and two bottles of water complete the set-up and were much appreciated. We ate in the Admirals' Bar, and the food was excellent, as were the hard-working, friendly and efficient staff. Breakfast was also excellent, once again served by friendly staff. Quite sad to leave after only one night and will almost certainly return next time we're in the area. Only one small downside, if you like a firm mattress, you may find these a little too soft, but we both slept extremely well."

The Royal Lion Hotel

"What a lovely hotel this is. I know it has been around for many years and my wife has fond memories of her childhood stays here. The hotel is quirky, with creaky floorboards, and a warren of a layout which I love. The sea view balcony room was gorgeous and the staff were very helpful and attentive. It has a lovely bar and restaurant and a small indoor swimming pool and games room. Sadly the pool wasn't open which was a shame but I appreciate these things happen. The balcony had clearly been the playground for the seagulls with bird poo stains on the table.Time to sort out that strange smell in the games room I think. Being high up, it is worth noting in very hot weather the upstairs rooms can get very hot overnight. They do provide a fan though. Note also that the seagulls play until the early hours on the roof so you hear them dancing on the tiles. Whilst dinner was lovely (as was the young Abbie that served us), breakfast was lacking. Plates and pastries weren't restocked until we asked and the English breakfast felt a bit cheap with quite rubbery food. Considering the doning room was almost full, I was expecting fresher food. I'm not normally very fussy when it comes to brekkie but I didnt eat this one. Ultimately I would definitely stay there again but perhaps skip breakfast."
