The city of Unterfohring right outside the gates of Munich invites you on a city trip to visit historical buildings, various sights as well as a popular local recreation area.
The significant media city of Unterfohring is located in the southern part of the state of Bavaria, on the northern border of the capital city Munich. Big players of the television business, such as ProSiebenSat1, Sky or Kabel Deutschland have set up here. Towards the west, the city borders the Isar River while the lakeFeringasee awaits with a size of more than 30 hectares in the east. The lake is up to seven yards deep and a popular leisure destination. Locals as well as tourists come together here. A proud monument rising above the roofs of the city centre of Unterfohring is the baroque onion dome of the pretty parish church of Saint Valentine. The church was built in 1718 and soon after become an important place of pilgrimage. Today, the building is listed. Even if you only take a short trip to Unterfohring, be sure to visit the museum of local history “Feringer Sach”, which opened in 2000. Fascinating exhibits and events will help visitors understand the diverse history of the city from a crossing location of the Isar River in the 12th century to the modern city of today. Two additional branches impress with a historical locksmith workshop, large transport sledges as well as furnishings from earlier times.
The rectory on Kirchenweg in the west of the city is a beautiful building with a hipped roof and a prominent gazebo tower. It impresses with its enchanting style from the New Renaissance. On the same street, visitors will find the War Memorial from the year 1900. A pillar made of cast iron reminds of the victims of the Franco-Prussian War from 1870/71. On its tip rests an impressive bronze lion.
Slightly south of the rectory, at Münchner Str. 63, awaits one of the most beautiful farm houses you will find during your city trip to Unterfohring. It was built around the year 1900. The gabled roof with dormer, pretty facade and stucco built in a baroque style impresses with beautifully carved doors and balconies made of cast iron. Outside the train station, an unusual and adored sculpture awaits. The artist Melanie Stiehl created an oversize, onion-shaped flower bowing in the wind for the art competition “Kunst und Bauen S-Bahn Unterföhring”.
