Bouldering, hiking, stargazing and wildlife spotting are some of the activities you can enjoy at this northern area of the Joshua Tree National Park.
Get up close to the natural riches of the Joshua Tree National Park at Indian Cove. Hike along trails that take you through arid landscapes and around otherworldly geological formations. Try rock climbing and bouldering, spot wildlife and sleep beneath the stars at Indian Cove.
The short Indian Cove Nature Trail presents an excellent introduction to the national park without having to walk too far. You’ll see plant species, such as the yucca, that typically grow in the Mojave Desert. Climb up onto large boulders, which double as great vantage points for enjoying sweeping views. Desert tortoises are often visible from spring to fall and birdlife, including the rare LeConte’s thrasher, inhabit the area.
A more challenging hike begins at the picnic area, located about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) east of the nature trail. Pick your route through Rattlesnake Canyon via a granite ravine until you reach the northern section of the Wonderland of Rocks. Famed for its oversized monzonite boulders, soaring cliffs and sandy canyons, this is one of the park’s most remarkable landscapes. Vivid wildflowers provide a stark contrast of colors against the rocks during the spring bloom.
Within the Wonderland of Rocks it’s possible to join the Willow Hole Trail and the Boy Scout Trail. The latter is a 16-mile (28-kilometer) long round trip that travels from a trailhead to the north of Indian Cove to the Hidden Valley area.
Bring your tent and camp overnight at the Indian Cove Campground. It has 101 campsites and reservations can be made 6 months prior to your arrival. Pitch up in the shadow of tall rocks, cook your dinner at the communal grills and wait for the Milky Way to appear overhead.
Indian Cove is a 10-minute drive from the city of Twentynine Palms. Facilities are limited inside the park so purchase all the food and drink you need before entering. The nearest park visitor centers are at Twentynine Palms and the village of Joshua Tree.
