Standing beside the Roman and Visigothic ruins are synagogues, mosques and churches, reminders of this city’s fascinating and vastly eclectic beginnings.
The Romans and Visigoths left their mark on the Toledo City Center, a circular old town quarter in the heart of the municipality. Its hilltop location made it an excellent choice as a strategic home, today providing stunning views of the Tagus River and the green valley below. Walk down narrow alleys and arrive at the many plazas for a sight of the churches, museums and palaces that light up the city.
Toledo has a rich and varied religious past, with a plethora of churches, mosques and synagogues. Marvel at the Toledo Cathedral, one of Spain’s finest examples of medieval Gothic architecture. Visit the well-preserved 10th-century Cristo de la Luz Mosque Ruins that celebrates the Moorish era in Toledo.
Arrive in the southwestern corner’s Jewish Quarter to see the majestic architecture of the Synagogue of El Tránsito, which has a museum documenting Toledo’s Jewish history. While in the area, stop at the Synagogue of Saint Mary the White, the Casa del Judío and Paseo del Tránsito park.
Nearby is the Victorio Macho Museum, a cliff-top gallery with unobstructed views of the valley and its river. Admire the sculptures, self-portraits and female nudes crafted by the museum’s namesake artist, who lived and worked in this impressive studio.
For cultural activities, head to the Iglesia de San Vicente, a 13th-century church now used for art exhibitions, concerts and workshops. You can also watch a play or recital at the Teatro de Rojas, known for the gold-framed fresco glazing its ceiling. Recall the city’s complex history with a trip to the Plaza Zocodover, where bullfights, duels and animal trades took place in earlier times.
