"Clean tidy compact twin room. Only 1 chair for 2 persons, made it uncomfortable to enjoy time in the room. Some staff were great especially Grace. Close to historical areas of Sydney. Transport options plentiful. Short transit to Circular Quay and the harbour and Opera house."

Shangri-La Sydney

Shangri-La Sydney

8/10 Good
"Beautiful stay, but concerning privacy issue I would have easily given Shangri-La 5 stars if it weren’t for two incidents involving housekeeping entering our room despite the "Do Not Disturb light being on". The first was particularly upsetting. A housekeeping supervisor entered while I was half-dressed and lying in bed. I heard the bell ring once but didn’t respond because the DND light was on, so I assumed no one would enter. To my shock, he came in and was suddenly standing in front of my bed. I initially thought it was my husband. He said he rang three times, but whether once or three times, "DND means do not enter". I reported it to the help desk. The staff member was very sweet, although her first response was, “Are you sure you didn’t call for service?” Thankfully, the manager handled it professionally. She called me, reviewed the camera footage, apologized, reassured me, and provided a $200 credit. Unfortunately, two days later, another male housekeeping staff member entered while the DND light was on, again saying he knocked three times. At that point, I was too tired to complain again. Aside from this, we loved our stay. Our suite had a beautiful harbour view, the room was always clean and well-stocked, staff were lovely, and breakfast was excellent. Without these two privacy incidents, this would have easily been 5 stars."

Mercantile Hotel The Rocks

Mercantile Hotel The Rocks

8/10 Good
"This is a lovely, historic, pub hotel. I believe that it has recently been completely refreshed. My room was great. My only concerns were related to the communication process. Being inexperienced with staying in a pub might be part of it. Checking in seemed fine, but returning to the hotel at 11:15pm, I found that I was locked out of the pub entrance so I proceeded to the door that I had been told was the after-hours door, but I couldn't see any "normal" key-card scanner. Luckily there was someone still behind the bar and I was able to knock and get their attention and they pointed out the very small, black button that I was meant to use. Being in my 70's, female, late, and alone probably made me more nervous than I should have been. (The streets felt very safe, FYI.) My second concern also could have been eliminated with a little better communication or info in the room. At my check-out at 9am, the pub is closed, and inaccessible. There is no one about. I wanted to store my luggage for a few hours and I wished that I had been told in advance that this would be the case. Other than these communication issues, I had a lovely stay, and I would be happy to return!"
