Stowe

Skiing, maple sugaring, hiking and shopping are some of the favorite activities in this Vermont village known as the Maple Syrup Capital of the World.

Stowe balances laid-back New England charm with bountiful outdoor opportunities, making it one of Vermont’s most visited villages. Bordered between the Green Mountains and Worcester Range, the area is renowned as an outdoor enthusiast’s playground.

Main Street exudes small-town charm, featuring antique stores, art galleries, historic inns and centuries-old general stores. The shopping district is bordered by Gold Brook Covered Bridge, a 19th-century registered landmark. Whether you believe reports that the bridge is haunted or not, it provides an ideal photo opportunity, night or day.

Stowe has many small restaurants and pubs. Microbreweries are cropping up throughout the town and are perfect spots to enjoy a local brew after a day of skiing.

Stowe Mountain Resort features two popular mountains for skiing and snowboarding. Spruce Peak offers broad beginner slopes and miles of intermediate trails. Visit Mount Mansfield, the highest point in Vermont, to enjoy its extensive alpine ski slopes and famous backcountry snowshoe and cross-country skiing trails. Top off the day at Cliff House, a ski-in, ski-out historic getaway located atop the mountain.

Explore Stowe’s terrain by dogsled, enjoy a leisurely excursion on snowshoes, ice skate, sled or snowmobile. Rent gear from facilities located throughout the town.

Afterward, unwind at a spa. Trapp Family Lodge is a popular resort founded by the family that inspired “The Sound of Music.” Explore true events behind the film at a von Trapp History Tour.

Visit the area in autumn to experience fall foliage which transforms the landscape into a spectrum of colors. Explore the changing leaves from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage or meander down country roads by bike or car.

If you have a sweet tooth, participate in the spring sugaring season. Stowe is filled with farms offering tours, festivals and other maple-themed events.

Burlington International Airport is a one-hour drive west of Stowe. The town is located just off Vermont Route 100, a popular scenic byway that snakes through the state.
