This postcard-perfect example of an Amalfi Coast town has flower-filled balconies and centuries-old churches perched high above the Mediterranean.

Wedged between the busier towns of Amalfi and Positano, Praiano is a small, picture-perfect resort village. It lies beneath the Tre Pizzi Mountain and runs to the shores of the Mediterranean.

The views in this resort are some of the best along the Amalfi Coast. It was for this reason that the Doges, the powerful dukes of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, resided here in the summer.

Come to relax by the sea on the pebble beach beneath the village. Restaurants and bars line the Marina di Praia, so you never have to stray far from the water’s edge. A dive centre here offers year-round diving trips for any skill level. Sign up for a lesson and explore the marine life along the Amalfi Coast.

Like much of the region, the best sightseeing can be done in Praiano’s churches that date back as far as the 12th century. See the Church of San Luca Evangelista, dedicated to the patron saint of Praiano. Admire the marble altars and 18th-century tiled floor. The Baroque-style church was built in 1588.

Climb the hill to Santa Maria a Castro, a church and convent famous for its views. Look out over the town from 364 metres (1,194 feet) above sea level. Go inside to admire the 15th-century fresco Madonna delle Grazie (The Madonna of Thanks).

Fortified towers once defended the Amalfi Coast from pirate attacks. Visit the Torre a Mare, a medieval tower that’s one of Praiano’s most interesting historic sights.

Praiano is easily accessible by bus or ferry from many of the major towns along the coast, including Positano, Amalfi and Sorrento. It’s about 7 kilometres (4.6 miles) from Positano and 6 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Amalfi. If you plan to stay for more than a day, consider buying the Praiano Card for discounts on services and attractions such as restaurants.

Clean room, friendly staff, beautiful location. Hotel restaurant dinner was delicious and highly recommend! It rained during our stay so we couldn’t use the pool but the outdoor area is so beautiful that we sat at the bar and enjoyed the view and atmosphere.
