Piazza Vecchia

Enjoy hot drinks in a café and admire the harmonious layout of the landmark Renaissance buildings that decorate this Old Square.

The Piazza Vecchia is the standout example of Bergamo’s majestic Renaissance squares. With an elegant fountain at its center, the plaza is fringed by quaint cafés and some of the city’s most historic buildings. Relax in this spacious square and piece together the history of the city via its well-preserved Renaissance structures.

Note that the plaza’s name is Italian for Old Square, which refers to its place at the heart of Bergamo’s political and cultural history. Meet friends in this charming piazza. Enjoy a meal at one of the traditional restaurants that have seating out in the square. It’s an ideal spot for a romantic evening date or an afternoon coffee.

Gaze at the impressive Contarini Fountain at the core of the plaza. It was donated to the city by its chief magistrate in 1780. Marvel at the three arches of the Ragione Palace, which dates back to the end of the 12th century. This is the oldest municipal seat in the region of Lombardy. Climb the 12th-century Old City Tower of Bergamo for the best views of the plaza and the rest of the historic center.

Admire the Renaissance touches of the Palazzo Nuovo, which was initially used as the town hall. Enter the Angelo Mai Library in the palace and browse the vast collection of ancient and prized books. The engravings and manuscripts date back as far as the 1500s. Another highlight on the square is the Podestà Palace. Visit its museum and make use of the interactive exhibits to learn about the Venetian impact on Bergamo.

Note that the plaza lies today on the spot where the Roman forum stood. The square was later an important part of medieval life in Bergamo, as the meeting point for business and social interactions.

The Piazza Vecchia is in the heart of the Citta Alta district of Bergamo. Ride the funicular to the top and walk northwest for a few minutes to get here. Visit nearby attractions, such as the Torre del Gombito, the Battistero and the Duomo di Bergamo.
