Room and the attached private outdoor onsen were excellent. Breakfast also worthwhile.
Only downside is that there are limited dining options nearby and dinner at the onsen is expensive (25000 yen/person)
Oni no sumika is a beautiful ryokan tucked away in Shuzenji. The staff are all extremely kind and accommodating (they do not speak English, so google translator is a must if you’re foreign and they are quick to use it)
The traditional breakfast was great, with many small dishes that leave you satisfied but not full to start your day.
If I am in shuzenji again I will be staying here.
The staff are so nice and helpful. There is private onsen in room and restaurant just at the corner. In room drinks for free and spacious, perfect location for recharge and away from city. The Shizenji and bamboo forest path are just 10 mins walk as well. Highly recommended and will come back again definitely!
I was thrilled to stay at this property, food was fantastic and the room was utterly wonderful.
However at 1.30 am the fire alarms started going, I wasn’t able to get hold of any one at the hotel until 2am , once we did it took about 30 mins to dismantle the alarms ( it wasn’t just my room)
When I checked out the following morning I was firstly surprised they didn’t offer to credit the nights bar tab (59 CAD) nor was there any form of apology
The other couple who experienced the same trouble (unrelated party) spoke Japanese , they too were horrified to receive the same treatment
Overall poor
For me, this was a piece of pure indulgence. It was a calm place, somewhere to relax and recharge. The breakfasts were exquisite. No dinner on offer during my stay (2nights) but the recommended restaurant (sushi restaurant) was very special. The town was quiet and very calm and if you're prepared to walk a little (taxi or bus it if not), there are great views of Mt Fuji San to be had. Highly recommended.
What an amazing ryokan with such supportive staff and amazing chef! Their gardens are magical and their rooms are super modern, clean and authentic to traditional ryokans. Loved our stay and loved the proximity to Shuzenji’s main village. A hidden gem in the Izu prefecture. Highly recommended!

No dinner available in this property.
Also Breakfast option is limited.
We had high hopes for this ryokan, and while the stay was overall great, there were a few downsides. The property itself is gorgeous, and the staff was kind and attentive, but the place definitely had a noticeable mildew smell, which took away from the experience a bit.
Unfortunately, we missed out on both breakfast and dinner because we didn’t book those in advance (lesson learned). I tried reaching out 24 hours before check-in but never got a response, so just a heads-up to plan meals ahead of time. There’s also not much nearby that’s open for breakfast or dinner, which left us scrambling a bit.
That said, it’s still a lovely place to stay if you’re prepared, and the traditional vibe of the ryokan is worth experiencing.
We loved our stay! Although it's a little bit outside of the town, it was very peaceful and relaxing. The kaiseki dinner was a highlight! And the staff was amazing! They let us into our villa early since it was ready. Definitely worth it!
Everything! It was like a dream, the whole place was astonishing and beautiful. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and even tho we did not speak much Japanese, they were kind and patient with us and explained the amenities for us. The room itself was amazing and the views to the pond were great, and the private onsen? Really peaceful atmosphere and very private.
The rooms are absolutely amazing and unbelievably beautiful. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful. The breakfast was very nice and traditional. They also provided traditional robes, socks, and sandals to wear to breakfast. There is not a lot of dining options around or much to do. If you have time, take a taxi to the bel-air park. I will definitely visit again.
