Discover one of the world’s tallest aqueducts, thermal spas and architectural wonders from Mexico’s colonial years at this town in western Hidalgo.

Ancient history, architectural prowess, nature and a superb culinary scene combine in Huichapan to create one of central Mexico’s most enthralling towns. First settled by Toltec and other pre-Hispanic tribes, Huichapan became a strategic location for soldiers during the Mexican War of Independence. It is categorized under the Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns) banner.

Begin your tour with a walk around the atmospheric streets of the Centro Histórico. Framing the main square are some of the town’s finest buildings, including the Capilla del Tercer Orden and Chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe. See El Chapitel, where political leaders gave the nation’s first cry of independence in 1812. Make a journey through the town’s history from pre-colonial times at the Museo de Arqueología e Historia.

Sit on a bench and enjoy excellent people-watching opportunities in the pretty Jardín Central. Overlooking this park’s northwestern corner is the 19th-century Palacio Municipal. Don’t miss La Casa del Diezmo, built by the Spanish for the collection of tithes. Look for bullet marks in the building’s walls, the result of attacks by conservative activists during the War of Reform.

For some adventure, visit nearby Parque Ecoturistico Los Arcos del Saucillo. Stand beneath the huge arches of El Saucillo Aqueduct and embark on horseback riding, mountain biking and rappelling pursuits. Organized tours from the town center to the park bring you close to fascinating geological formations and antique cave paintings. Alternatively, relax in natural hot springs at Parque Ecológico Los Sabinos.

Relax at the end of a busy day by experiencing the typical flavors of Hidalgo. Sample dishes infused with unusual ingredients, including escamoles (ant eggs) and chinicuiles (Maguey worms). Barbecued lamb and pork also feature frequently on the menu. Accompany your meal with a carnival, which is a cocktail of tequila, orange juice and cinnamon.

Huichapan is about 105 miles (170 kilometers) north of Mexico City. The nearest airport is Querétaro Intercontinental Airport, 47 miles (75 kilometers) to the west.
