Grenen Art Museum

Founded and operated by one of the best-known Danish artists, Axel Lind, this seaside museum showcases the work of local painters and sculptors.

The northern coast of Denmark has been immortalized in the work of countless Danish artists. The shifting sands, low lying vegetation and the turbulent seas appear in the work of Edgar Funch, Niels Helledie and Svend Danelund. These names feature prominently at the Grenen Art Museum, alongside Axel Lind. Lind is arguably the best-known contemporary marine artist from the region.

In 1977, Axel Lind founded this museum on the edge of Skagen. Visit the Grenen Art Museum to see its permanent collection of paintings and sculptures and take the opportunity to browse the largest collection of Lind paintings in the world.

The museum’s location is unique because it is one of the northernmost structures in Jutland. Those interested in contemporary art and the stunning landscape of the Grenen region will find plenty to like at this art museum.

Start your tour with a walk through the museum’s large sculpture collection. The Whale is a permanent show of the Russian sculptor Peter Reichet. While much of the sculpture work at the museum is bronze or metal, Reichet’s pieces are largely made of crystal glass. You can also find work by Nordic, Italian and Russian sculptors here. Temporary and traveling exhibitions regularly feature in the museum.

Make your way to the two collections of Lind paintings. Ice Empire is a body of work inspired by the icebergs of Greenland, Denmark’s northern island. The ephemeral paintings compliment the work of local painters that depict the seas surrounding Grenen. Another Lind collection highlights his fascination with ocean light.

The Grenen Art Museum has varying opening days each season, so check the museum’s official website for details. Entry is free. The museum can easily be reached by car from Skagen and parking is available at the end of Road 40. A walk along the coast brings you to the museum from Skagen in about 45 minutes.
