The malls, art museums and temple shrines both above and below ground level combine to keep you and your family entertained for days.

Filled with hidden surprises, Tenjin merges Fukuoka’s historic traditions with innovative and modern features. Coursing through its arteries are leafy parks and shopping streets adorned with fashionable brands. Delve beneath the surface for a subterranean labyrinth connecting the area’s landmarks.

Among the district’s highlights is Tenjin Underground Mall, which connects to the Tenjin Minami Station. Burrow into this subterranean shopper’s haven and explore the 150 high-end and affordable shops lining its corridors. Admire the elegant ceiling pattern and the European stone floors that bring a touch of class to this underground mall.

Back on the surface, bring your kids to the Tenjin Core shopping mall, whose shops target affluent adolescents. It has a range of services and restaurants, in addition to fashion boutiques showcasing the latest in regional and international trends.

For a shift from shopping, study the works of art on display in the myriad galleries. See the ancient Buddhist sculptures in the Fukuoka Art Museum and view indoor exhibitions and outdoor multi-floor landscape vegetation art at the terraced ACROS Fukuoka building next to Tenjin Central Park.

With Japanese customs and tradition in mind, visit the Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine and the Ankokuji Temple. The Kego Shrine is attached to the charming Kego Park. Spend sunny days at other green havens, including Suzaki Park and Ohori Park. On rainy afternoons, the ACROS Fukuoka Symphony Hall offers a refined alternative.

Served by its namesake metro and bus stops, Tenjin stands right in the center of Fukuoka. Walk west from Nakasu Island, which is known for its range of yatai restaurants overlooking the water. Try the excellent ramen noodles and hot pots in these quaint culinary huts. When in the area, ensure you see other neighboring districts such as Hakata and Maizuru.

Friendly and helpful staff. Close to eateries. There were noises of equipment/machinery as well as people chatting as they walked the back lanes. It didn’t bother us too much but might for those sensitive to noise. Overall a good stay.
