A detailed model of a European cityscape with various architectural styles, including traditional and modern buildings.
A display of blue and white porcelain plates with intricate designs.

Wander between the rooms of a 13th-century fortress and a modern exhibition center to find art and artifacts that showcase Frankfurt’s ancient and recent history.

Retrace the story of Frankfurt since medieval times at the Historical Museum (Historisches Museum). Educate yourself about everything from the coronation of the city’s early German emperors to the turbulent period of World War II. Browse collections of ceramics, paintings, period furniture, photographs, sculptures and weapons. The Historical Museum is a complex including the Saalhof, a palace built about 1200, and other historic and contemporary buildings.

Explore the permanent exhibits, which narrate the city’s past in several buildings. All exhibits are organized logically and accompanied by information signs in English. Start in the former royal castle, where the noble existence of German kings and the Staufer dynasty is brought to life. A 12th-century silver bowl is one of the treasures. Go to the Customs Tower to learn about life, commerce and trade on the Main River in the Mainpanorama exhibit.

One of the major sections is the Collectors and Donors of Frankfurt exhibit, which features the private collections of 12 revered benefactors. See entomology displays, faience porcelain, medieval armor, a numismatic collection and scientific tools, among other artifacts.

Frankfurt Once? and Frankfurt Now! present characterizations of how the city came to be and what it is today. See the Frankfurt model, which was created after a 2015 survey of over 1,000 of the city's residents. Their perspectives of how they view the city were translated into a model by Hermann Helle.

Located at the heart of the Old Town, the museum is easy to reach via public transportation such as tram and U-Bahn train. The nearest U-Bahn station is Dom/Römer. You can park, for a fee, about a 5-minute walk away on Domstraße.

Frankfurt’s Historical Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and has an admission fee, which includes a guided tour. Entrance is free on the last Saturday of every month except August and December. Purchase the Museumsufer ticket for unlimited 2-day access to over 30 museums.
