"We enjoyed our stay at dar lala Chafya. It was an authentic experience to live in a real Moroccan house of the old medina (Fes al bali). The house was spacious and a good size for a family of four (2 bedrooms). There was a terrace, dining room, sitting section with a tv with youtube for the kids and bathroom of good standard and size. We visited in December with cold nights, so we were glad to have heaters on in all sleeping rooms, dining area and the bathroom, and thick Moroccan blankets....

Step into the 9th-century world of Fes El Bali, one of the largest car-free urban areas on earth. This UNESCO site preserves medieval Islamic architecture within honey-colored walls and winding alleys. The Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque anchors this ancient labyrinth, home to the world's oldest continuously operating university. Wander through bustling souks where artisans practice centuries-old crafts in open workshops. Traditional riads offer peaceful courtyard retreats from the sensory-rich marketplace. Mint tea flows freely while the calls to prayer echo across this authentic cultural treasure.

Winding alleyways reveal bustling souks where vendors sell everything from spices to handwoven carpets. Visitors can explore the Dar Batha Museum or watch leather being dyed in the colorful tanneries. The medieval atmosphere remains wonderfully intact with honey-colored walls and carved cedar doors framing this living museum.

Mellah

Step into Fes's historic Mellah, where centuries of Jewish heritage come alive through narrow cobblestone streets and distinctive architecture. The beautifully restored Ibn Danan Synagogue showcases intricate tilework and carved cedar ceilings. White-washed buildings with wrought-iron balconies and Star of David motifs create a unique visual landscape. The ancient Jewish cemetery tells silent stories while local silversmiths continue traditional crafts in bustling jewelry souks. Wander through intimate alleyways where the scent of mint tea mingles with spices. This pedestrian-friendly quarter offers authentic cultural immersion with minimal tourist infrastructure just minutes from Fes el-Bali.
