The Riad itself was beautiful and the room was really spacious. The only thing we didn’t like was the smell coming from the bathroom. We were traveling as a couple and the host was only talking to my boyfriend, no interaction with me at all. Me as a girl I did not really feel welcomed.
I have mixed feelings about this Riad.
Ups
- Nice decor. Beautiful building.
- Big room with an excellent heater.
- We always came back to a perfectly cleaned room.
- Youssef was a helpful fellow. At the same time he didn’t seem particularly interested in answering our questions (travel related) if we were not taking his travel offers.
- Good location, 15-20 mins from the core of the Médina.
Downs
- The WiFi didn’t work for us at all. We caught an open network and used it sparingly since it was open and was very weak anyways. Very frustrating.
- the water heater broke and we went without hot water for 1.5 days. We were given an electric kettle and a small tub. It got the job done but wasn’t fun. Once repaired, the heater worked well.
- No soap was provided. Apparently the hand soap was supposed to be used for showering. We had to run over to the closest shop to buy regular soap.
- Youssef set us up for a day trip to Meknès, Volubilis, and Moulay Idriss for 800 Dhs. The car and driver were good but we were taken to a grossly overpriced restaurant for lunch. Left a bad impression.
- We were quoted 1,600 for a transfer to Chefchaouen when we did it ourselves by private taxi for 600. That’s a big difference.
- The city tax was not included in the price. We had to pay cash and did not receive a receipt for it. Maybe that’s the norm.
- The breakfast was the standard fare.
Our experience at Riad L'Artiste was extremely disappointing.
We were greeted by Youssef who was aggressive and demanded he accompany us through the city and join us for dinner, which we did not want. He offered my boyfriend drugs and cut his toenails behind a partition while we ate breakfast. He took us to an overpriced, touristy dinner despite us saying this was the opposite of what we were looking for. To top it all off, he demanded we write a good review before we departed from Fes.
The riad itself is filthy and the bathroom smelled like there was a dead animal rotting in the tub drain. There were children's sheets on the bed, with no comforter, and the bath products smelled like they were special made for a stripper. It does not have a nightclub or a restaurant and there were no other guests to be seen.
The one positive was Youssef's father Mohammed, who we did have take us to spots around the city we had wanted to see. He was kind, thoughtful, and a pleasure to be with for a few hours.
We will not be revisiting Riad L'Artiste.
