Church of Santa Maria Assunta

Visitors flock to this church from far and wide to see its stunning interior and its impressive collection of rare religious artworks.

Take some time out from the hectic city streets and relish a moment of stillness in the peaceful setting of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. This Catholic church is home to a remarkable collection of religious masterpieces, including works by Renaissance masters such as sculptor Andrea della Robbia and La Spezia local Giovanni Battista Casoni.

The church is located in the heart of La Spezia’s historic Old Town. It’s not known exactly when the church was founded but records mention it as early as the 13th century. However, it has been rebuilt many times since then, including near-complete reconstruction after suffering significant damage during World War II.

While the exterior facade is intriguing, the star attraction is the display of artistic treasures held inside. Visitors with an interest in religious history and art will find much to admire in the cavernous interior. Explore the beautiful nave and trace the Bible stories told through the art on display. A glazed earthenware piece created by Andrea della Robbia depicts the coronation of the Virgin, while a tapestry by Giovanni Battista Casoni tells the story of the multiplication of loaves (of bread). Near the baptismal font stands the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew by Genoese painter Luca Cambiaso. All three of these works came from the nearby church and convent of St. Francis.

Other highlights include the Sacred Heart Chapel, which features frescoes by the local artist Luigi Agretti and other noteworthy religious works. On your way out of the church, be sure to stop to examine the intricate relief work that stands over the arched doorways.

Since the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is an active place of worship, visitors are asked to be respectful of worshipers and keep noise to a minimum. Located in La Spezia’s Old Town, in Piazza Beverini Giulio, the church is a short stroll away from other popular destinations such as Museo Civico Etnografico and Museo Civico Amedeo Lia. Ask locals about current opening hours for the church.
