Where to stay in Canberra

Find the best Canberra areas and neighborhoods for the activities you enjoy most.

Canberra City Centre

Canberra City Centre pairs Australia's political heartbeat with cultural richness. Parliament House and the High Court stand alongside the National Gallery and Portrait Gallery, showcasing the nation's heritage. Lake Burley Griffin creates a stunning backdrop with pristine waters reflecting modern architecture. Wide boulevards lined with native trees create a formal, planned aesthetic. The area buzzes with government workers during weekdays but quiets down after hours. Cafes and restaurants cater to diverse tastes, though many close early evenings. Museums typically welcome visitors daily from 10am to 5pm. Well-designed walking paths make exploring the lakefront and manicured gardens a pleasure for visitors.

Kingston

The Kingston Foreshore brings together lakeside charm and trendy urban vibes along Canberra's Lake Burley Griffin. Scenic waterfront paths lead past upscale restaurants with outdoor terraces and sculptural playgrounds. The area's contemporary glass buildings complement heritage brick structures and public art installations. Old Bus Depot Markets buzz with local artisans every Saturday. Visitors can browse handmade crafts and sample gourmet food while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. Clean walking paths connect expansive parklands perfect for picnics with mountain views. Water activities like kayaking and sailing make this neighborhood an ideal spot for outdoor enthusiasts.

Braddon

Braddon buzzes as Canberra's hippest precinct where industrial roots meet artistic flair. Once filled with warehouses, the area now showcases local designers, galleries, and craft breweries along lively Lonsdale Street. Creative energy flows through converted brick buildings housing artisanal cafes and unique boutiques. The neighborhood's vibrant nightlife attracts both locals and visitors seeking quality evening entertainment. Explore the Canberra Contemporary Art Space for a taste of the local art scene. With excellent walkability and nearby attractions, Braddon offers the perfect balance of urban excitement and creative discovery.

Barton

Barton showcases Australia's political heart, with Parliament House's distinctive flagpole piercing Canberra's skyline. Old Parliament House adds historic charm with its white colonial facade. The Australian War Memorial stands proudly within the Parliamentary Triangle, surrounded by manicured lawns stretching toward Lake Burley Griffin. The neighborhood offers excellent walking paths along the lake foreshore for visitors interested in Australian governance. Wide ceremonial boulevards lined with native eucalyptus create a dignified atmosphere. Government buildings maintain formal hours, typically open weekdays with Parliament House tours available most days.

Capital Hill

The grassy rise of Capital Hill is Canberra’s crowning feature. The perfectly circular hilltop locale is the core from which the rest of the city radiates.

"The Deco hotel is our favourite place to stay in Canberra. We have stayed in range of the 1-bed and 2-bed apartment configurations since 2020, and every stay is perfect! We cannot fault anything. The staff are consistently helpful and always have accommodated my requests, and the housekeeping staff are incredible. I do not know how they keep the showers looking as if they have just been built after 6 years. Parking is free, and easy to access. Rooms are very quiet considering the locations near Northbourne Ave. and Braddon. Apartments are very generously sized, great kitchen, laundry and well equipped with large sofas, + we have always had a balcony with chairs and table. Lovely bedding, range of pillows and good quality linens. The on-site restaurant, which we have only used once, is also very good. Special mention of Harpreet, on front desk, who has assisted us on our last 2 stays. His customer service is excellent - thank you! I feel the accomm is excellent value for the quality of the hotel and highly recommend"
