California Academy of Sciences

California Academy of Sciences which includes interior views and coral as well as a large group of people
This vast scientific institution has a large indoor rainforest and the world’s biggest planetarium theatre.

Originally founded in 1853, this fascinating Academy went through a complete rebuild in 2008. Since it’s reopening, this globally-recognised scientific institution now boasts the world’s first indoor rain forest, the largest planetarium theatre and a green rooftop, as well as an aquarium and a natural history museum.

Scientific research into the human sciences takes place behind the doors of the academy and on-site global experts include botanists, anthropologists, ornithologists and geologists.

Experience the feel of the tropics at the indoor rainforest exhibit where you’ll be surrounded by trees, and exotic birds and butterflies will fly round freely as you make your way round this tropical paradise. You’ll also come across the odd reptile that normally calls the rainforest home.

For stargazers, take your seat in the Morrison Planetarium. Gaze in a skyward direction and wait for the lights to go out and the show to begin. Feel yourself being transported way above the clouds and into outer space, where you’ll get a glimpse of what the real universe actually looks like.

Back on our own planet, head to the Kimball Natural History Museum to explore the evolution of life on earth from the big bang to the present day.

If the weather’s good and you fancy a bit of respite from a busy schedule, the rooftop is a peaceful haven in which to spend a bit of quiet time before the exploration continues.

Next maybe you could take a behind-the-scenes tour around the aquarium and the academy where knowledgeable guides will divulge snippets of fascinating information to help you make the most of your visit. There are scheduled tour times, so check these out beforehand on the academy’s website to see what time they’re on. If you need to refuel after all the excitement, the cosmopolitan Academy Café or the Moss Room on site offer plenty of dining options.

The California Academy of Sciences stands at the heart of the Golden Gate Park and is easily accessible by public transport, car, bike and shuttle services. Arrive early to avoid the crowds remembering that if you’re driving, car parks fill up fast during weekends and holidays.

The academy is open daily except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
