We really enjoyed our stay at Sofitel Downtown. The staff particularly are really friendly and helpful. The location by the Nile was perfect for walks down the Corniche. The food was good at all their restaurants, the concierge set us up with our guide for three days at prices that were comparable to others per my research. I wish I had booked some time at the Spa, but the pool was lovely too. I’d highly recommend this hotel.

The location is great, the bed is exceptionally comfortable and the sheets were amazing. However, even though we were in a non smoking room/floor, our room smelt smoky. We suspected there were people smoking on the floor and it also was coming in through the vent. The hotel seems to prioritize the comfort of smokers, you can tell that in the lobby where part of it is smoking …. So that means it’s all smoking. We went to other floors to check them out to see and we felt that no floors were truly non smoking so we didn’t ask to be moved. I cannot believe in this day and age any chain would allow indoor smoking. Everything is extremely expensive, example, a cup of tea is $6.00 and a glass of sparking wine is about $20.00. Definitely not worth it and no ambiance in the lobby.

Only area you should stay in downtown Cairo…Modern hotel with modern amenities and extremely professional. Only downside is the constant cigarette smoke inside the building. That is a lot to experience 24/7 on your stay in Cairo! Be ready to negotiate and re-negotiate everything you do in the city 😂 It’s a bit too much, but try to have a little fun with it too 😉

Please not that 4 star in Egypt is line 2 stars anywhere else. There was good and room for improvement. The good: - location - safety - very excellent beds, bedding and pillows - free water daily - Nice big bathroom and nice towels - staff were friendly The not so good: - although we were supposedly on a nonsmoking floor, the ventilation system was pumping in smoke into our room. As soon as you got into the elevator of our floor, you can smell smoke so obviously they tolerate smoking, or they all smoke so they can’t smell it themselves. - the hotel offered to move us, we didn’t move because we felt it would not help as The hotel clearly prioritizes smokers vs non-smokers, you can tell that in the lobby where it smells like smoke and flowers - 2 sparking wine were $38 CDN, total rip off -breakfast is nice but not worth $56 CDN - no real atmosphere in the hotel.
