I booked the cheapest single room because I was paying for myself at a conference, for 4 nights. Although the booking had stated the bathroom was not ensuite, I found that the toilet was down 2 flights of stairs, not easy for night-time needs.There was a shower and a basin in the bedroom, which was very cramped. My main problem was the lighting as I prefer to read in bed. On first night I found the supplied reading lamp too dim and the overhead light had one non-functioning bulb. I informed the manager next day and this bulb was replaced. But nothing was done to replace the dim bulb on the reading lamp to my frustration for the remaining 3 nights. The manager seemed to be on his own the entire weekend, both cooking and serving tables at breakfast, and managing the reception desk, which meant I could not easily have a longer conversation with him about the defect. This hotel is well situated near a street with lots of places to eat.

I found the location of the New Stein to be good for me. You are in walking distance of the Royal Pavilion, the Brighton Pier and The Laines. It was also easy to get to the Seven Sisters from New Stein - I just had to walk down the end of the street and catch the Coaster 12 bus to the Seven Sisters Visitor Centre. I also found it handy that you could buy breakfast and dinner (limited menu) at the hotel.
