The room and the Great Wall view was excellent. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The free pick-up and drop-off to the wall was a nice touch. The spa and massage was great and the breakfast was really nice too.
Peaceful, respectful and tastefully set retreat right under the gaze of the mountains and the great wall. Staff were very accommodating and professional and helped with travel, hiking and access to and from the great wall. Food and room were really good and gym/spa facilities 24hr opening very welcome to soak in the mountain air. Well worth a visit for a day or two.
This is a great spot to explore a beautiful section of the Great Wall out of the hustle and bustle of Beijing. We were at the hotel on Labour Day (1 May to 5 May) which is typically a very busy time in China for all major attractions. The hotel and village were not overcrowded at all which was great. The Great Wall is a 20 to 25 minute walk from the hotel to the ticket purchasing area. The hotel also offers a free shuttle to the ticket purchasing area. We got to the Great Wall at around 8:30am on 2 separate days to beat the tour bus crowds. The Great Wall was a highlight and was not overcrowded.
Most excellent service and resort. It was an experience of a lifetime. Staff went out of their way making sure everything was perfect from booking a driver to ensuring our next hotel had our information to book tourist events.
We will be back even though half way around the world away. WE Will Tell Everyone this is a destination of choice for a China experience.
The Brickyard was an absolutely lovely stay while visiting Beijing to walk the Great Wall. The staff was very knowledgeable, the food was delicious, the room was cozy and unique, and we had an overall wonderful stay. Their WiFi was reliable, the accepted my US credit card, and they made the trip to the Great Wall easy!
It was a lovely stay.
1. Cozy experience, great people, away from the city hustle bustle.
2. Amazing head chef: He treated us like we are his family. We had specific dietary requirements (Indian vegetarian). He cooked special dishes for us in the breakfast buffet. The special meal charges were also super reasonable
3. Close to the Great Wall
4. The hotel is in a small village - head there if you would like leisurely walks and relaxation. Don't expect great amenities that a city hotel would offer. There is however a TV/video room, board game room, etc.
5.The starry sky is just awesome.
6. There is a Chinese hot pot restaurant near the hotel. They can do a lot of customized dishes for you if you can manage the language translation.
This was a big disappointment for us. The house is much too cold for winter, you can feel the cold coming off the walls. We went through half the firewood in a few hours, all huddling around the fireplace, and now all our coats smell like burned wood. We moved all the space heaters into the bedrooms and slept in hoodies and pants to get through the night. When they showed us to our room, they brought a picnic basket with breads and jams and yogurt. We asked about breakfast and they said here you are. So we had stale bread the next day and had to make our own coffee - it was too cold to eat yogurt. Then when we checked out, the same person who showed us our room said oh you can have brunch, it is free for you. I said why didn't you tell us yesterday, to which I received no response. At brunch there were hot eggs, bacon, and potatoes, which we would have appreciated, but we were so fed up with the place, we did not want to stay a minute longer. The house seemed nice enough, but it was freezing, and service was terrible, especially at $500. Definitely would NOT recommend.
Beautiful property, amazing service!
Gorgeous views of the surrounding area and Great Wall. Chef prepared a special meal for our family...so delicious! We arranged for private car service from Beijing thru Brickyard and it was perfect. Stayed only one night but it was the highlight of our 10 days in China!

A Unique Experience
The Brickyard Retreat is certainly unique. It is family owned and operated and maintains that authentic feel. This also means it does not necessarily have all of the amenities and high level service one might expect.
The location is great and very convenient for visiting the Great Wall.
The restaurant and overall food offering was less than stellar and in fact, not very good.
I would stay here again because it is such a lovely setting but I would come with a plan to experience the local restaurants and scene around the village.
We stayed dry Grandma's Place and loved it. Staying in Mutianyu is perfect to beat the crowds coming in from Beijing on the Great Wall, and the Brickyard was the perfect place to stay
