"Arrived to a bank of motorbikes which was a bit intimidating but after that (they left after 5 mins) everything was A1👌 Good sunday roast; room tastefully decorated; shower was great but best of all was the quality mattress and feather pillows - slept easily which is unusual for me in hotels. Lovely ambience throughout the hotel too. Stylish & excellent stay for the price point. Would def go back. "

The medieval fortress that gives this market town its name offers spectacular views across the River Tees. Explore the Bowes Museum's impressive art collection, then sample local ales at one of the charming stone-built pubs along the high street.
Quaint little market town with lots of lovely independent businesses and antique shops . Very quiet and picturesque. Loads of pubs, cafes and foodie places. Great little theatre and the Bowes Museum is amazing

Town is a typical market town, but with pretty buildings and alleys. Very good for antique shops and as a gateway to surrounding countryside, the Bowes Museum is a gem. However, streets could be cleaner- a lot of chewing gum and dog poop on pavements

Didn't do any sightseeing as here for a wedding. Driving through the Castle looked imposing and lots of unique independent shops in the centre.
"The hotel building looked fab in the photo's. Arriving there it was even better. A beautiful old building linked to a new extension was amazing. Freindly and helpfully staff. Cant wait to go back"
"The perfect hotel!
Room 229, more like an apartment than hotel room.
All spotless, and extremely helpful staff.
Breakfast was usual buffet style woth plenty of other options if needed.
Local for everything that was needed myself as well."
"Right from the friendly welcome by Tom, my stay was fantastic. I was travelling myself with 2 young children for a family funeral in the area. All the staff were friendly and very good with the children. They were made to feel very welcome by all the staff. We enjoyed a meal in the evening. Good choice for adults and children. We also all enjoyed the buffet breakfast too. "
"Very slick check-in with staff who clearly know their job, are all over the systems and clearly want you to have the best stay possible. Robes and slippers are available to use if visiting the pool or spa. Spacious, quiet room with tea/coffee making facilities and quality toiletries. Choice of pillows and large comfortable bed.
We ate in the restaurant both evenings. The food choice was wide, well cooked and presented invitingly. However, the waitress who served us both evenings obviously knew “the drill” of her role, but in reality was far from assisting you to have a positive dining experience. She was going through the motions and really gave the impression that she did not want to be there. She did neither take nor act on criticisms seriously, appearing not to care if you enjoyed your dining experience or not. She chewed , presumably, gum throughout the service and was extremely sullen at all times.
This is a very comfortable hotel and gives very good value for money."
"Bright, spacious room in this lovely hotel. Bar area works v well and it’s nice to be able to sit outside.
Excellent central location means you an walk everywhere. Highly recommended."
"Fantastic food in this lovely old pub. Really enjoyed my stay and was really impressed with the food. Generous portions and absolutely delicious. The chips were outstanding! I will definitely be back when im next in the area. "
