Arnhem was first mentioned in the 9th century AD, making it one of the older cities in the Netherlands. Although a large part of the city centre was destroyed in the Second World War, a number of historic buildings and features survived. The city also has an extensive tunnel system which dates back to the Middle Ages. The tunnels, which were closed for many years, have been fully restored and are now open to the public.
You can take in the centuries-old splendour of the Historische kelders (tunnel system) on your own or with a guide. For a lovely view over the city, take the lift to the top of the tower in Sint-Eusebiuskerk, the city's biggest church.
A must for shoppers is the Modekwartier, a district that boasts exclusive fashion and design by a few select designers. Burgers’ Zoo is a great place to take the children, as is the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum (Netherlands Open Air Museum). And if you'd like to get away from the hustle and the bustle of the city, Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe is just a stone's throw away.
Arnhem has four train stations. The sights are easily reached by city and regional bus. Arnhem isn't really all that big, so the city is also easy to explore on foot. Wander through the narrow alleyways, check out the quaint squares and take a trip out into the surrounding nature.
Arnhem is easy to reach by train from every city in the Netherlands. The city is also easy to reach if you're touring the Netherlands by car. You can park your car at your hotel, on the street or in a parking garage, for a fee of course.
