Explore the largest town in southern Belize to learn about the intriguing culture of the Garifuna, who descended from shipwrecked slaves.

The capital of the large Stann Creek district, Dangriga is a hub of intriguing cultures and various languages and music types, giving it a distinctive feel. Listen to the local Punta Rock Caribbean music for rhythmic ambiance added to your day at the beach or shops. Watch a traditional dance performance by a local group, such as the Waribagaba Dancers.

The town’s fascinating history is revealed at the Gulisi Garifuna Museum. See the works of a local musician and artist at the Pen Cayetano Studio Gallery. Browse market stalls in the center of town. Try some of the delicacies from the region, such as cashew wine and fish cooked in coconut milk. Go to the beach to take part in your choice of activities, including fishing, boating and diving.

Discover stunning features in the nearby rainforest of Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Regular buses will take you on the 40-minute trip and guides will show you the waterfalls, challenging trails and tropical jungle terrain. Among the popular attractions is an airplane crash site.

Visit in November for the week-long festival in the lead-up to Garifuna Settlement Day. Join in the festivities at the Miss Garifuna parade, watch a bike race and see the torch-lit parade.

The region has a hot, tropical climate with many wet months and a dry season from January to April. The commune was once known as Stann Creek Town but was renamed to reflect its Garifuna culture heritage.

The town is in southeast Belize, near the Melinda Forest Reserve and the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. The small Dangriga Airport provides domestic flights. For far-flung destinations, take a bus, taxi or car north to the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, which is nearly 2.5 hours away. The town center is small and easily walkable. Take taxis for longer distances.

Upon arrival in Dandriga, look for a sign that reads Mabuiga, meaning “welcome.” The town’s range of cultures ensures that is exactly how you will feel during your stay.

"If the cabana I was in was any closer to the beach it would almost be in the water. The unobstructed view of the sea was amazing from the chairs and hammock on the front veranda. In front of the cabana there were chairs and hammocks near the waterline as well. Arlene is a fantastic host and supplied ..."
