Prepare to laugh your way through any performance at Charles Playhouse. While the red-brick building may look unassuming from the outside, this black box theater hosts two of Boston’s most unconventional acts: Shear Madness and the Blue Man Group.

If you prefer music concerts to theatrical productions, visit the Orpheum. The historic theater attracts world-class musicians, bands and rock stars.

Time your visit around summer so you can attend Shakespeare on the Common. Every July and August, the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company gives free performances of a Shakespeare play. Even if you don’t have time to stay for a show, take a few minutes to walk through the lobbies of some of the Theatre District’s most beautiful venues. The Schubert and Wang theaters are known for being particularly stunning.
