Old Town Bridge Tower

Looming over the eastern edge of Charles Bridge, this graceful tower marks the entrance to Prague’s Old Town and offers views over the city’s picturesque rooftops.

The Old Town Bridge Tower (Staroměstská mostecká věž) is a striking Gothic monument that heralds the entrance to Prague’s Old Town neighborhood. It’s also the eastern gateway to Charles Bridge, a historic bridge that crosses the Vltava River. Visit the Old Town Bridge Tower to admire its architecture and artwork and enjoy uninterrupted views from its gallery.

Famed German-Czech architect Petr Parléř designed the tower in the late 1300s under the order of King Charles IV. Gaze up at the tall structure to see sculptures of St. Vitus, Charles IV and Wenceslas IV. Look for the coats of arms, which represent the historic lands of the Holy Roman Empire. Walk through the tower’s arch, as the Czech kings once did during coronation processions.

Climb the 138 steps to the viewing platform. On your way, study paintings of coats of arms and Gothic statues. Peer down on people crossing Charles Bridge from the Old Town to Malá Strana.

Gaze across the characteristic domes, spires and red-tiled roofs of Prague’s architectural landscape. Major city attractions are visible in all directions. Look west toward Malá Strana to spot Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. Look east over the Old Town to see the lively Old Town Square.

After enjoying the views, take a gentle stroll across the Charles Bridge. Admire the bridge’s collection of 30 Baroque sculptures, most notably a statue of the Bohemian St. John of Nepomuk. Pause to browse handicraft stalls, see work by local artists and watch street performers. Learn about the history of the bridge at the Charles Bridge Museum or visit the 17th-century St. Francis of Assisi Church, both near the tower.

Reach the Old Town Bridge Tower easily by foot, metro or tram. It is located at the edge of Prague’s Old Town. The nearest metro station is Staroměstská, which is a 5-minute walk away.

Visit the Old Town Bridge Tower any day. There is an admission fee to access the viewing area.
