"The Onsen/hot mineral baths were terrific and well laid out. The staff was polite and welcoming. With more foreign tourism Japanese hotels need better prepared English speakers; the staff here had no one really fluent in English. This was especially bad in the restaurant. Also, unless you are an adventurous foodie, I don’t recommend getting half board. Too much food (courses) at dinner and very very traditional Japanese. Breakfast is also traditional Japanese. "We stayed at Oohira hotel in October to use it as a base for hiking. It is perfectly located, near the top end of Zao Onsen, right next to the base of the mountain and the big Zao outdoor onsen. We found it with no issues, and the hotel will pick you up from the bus station if you call in advance. The main thing to stand out for us at Oohira was the staff, who were really excellent throughout. They even spoke some English which was surprising and welcome! "The breakfast is truly an amazing value!! Such an abundance of healthy, hearty food for 500 yen. The bath is quite nice! The lobby and lounge areas are super swanky, too! The single-person room was good enough for me! A complementary snack and teabags, with a hot water pot and a pitcher of ice water provided. Very polite and kind staff at checkin, breakfast, and checkout. They also held my luggage for the day after checkout."
