Swim, surf big waves and work on your tan at this beautiful and quiet beach located along Mexico's Pacific shoreline.

Enjoy the soft sand, rock formations, coconut trees and clear water that make Playa Brujas one of the most picturesque beaches in Mazatlán. It is also one of the emptiest and is located a short distance away from the resort town's popular tourist beaches.

Bruja is the Spanish word for witch. The beach owes its name to a local legend of a witch, who it is said used to drown swimmers. Another legend says that witches came here historically to perform rituals.

Bring your body board or surfboard and enjoy the feeling of surging forward on a powerful wave. A variety of surfboards and body boards can be rented or purchased on the beach. Playa Bruja is considered a good surfing spot for its constant waves. The biggest swells are during the summer, from November through April. If you have never previously tried surfing, book lessons with local operators, who can also drive you to the beach.

Work on your tan and go for a refreshing swim in the warm water. Be aware that the current can be strong here. Go for a walk along the length of the beach and climb on the rock formation at its southern end. Some people think that part of the rock’s shape resembles the profile of a witch, another explanation for the origin of the beach’s name. Nearby is a restaurant serving seafood specialties and regional dishes. Alternatively, bring a picnic with you for lunch, dinner or a late-night meal while you wait for the sunset.

Playa Brujas is located in the Cerritos district, about a 10-minute drive north of Zona Dorada. If you don't have a car, take a taxi or any bus going to Cerritos. Another good recommendation in this area is the neighboring Playa Cerritos. It is also nearly empty for much of the day.
