Very nice quirky pub with a handful of rooms above the pub.
Rooms are excellently appointed and dressed period, which really suits the age of the building.
The food and drinks in the pub are excellent quality, and thankfully the weather was good and we spent a few happy hours in the beer garden.
Great place to stay!! Room was nice and large and breakfast in the room with coffee and tea are perfect for a pre town walking adventure. The tavern itself offers a wonderful dinner and gorgeous atmosphere. Staff was also funny and hospitable!
it was my wife’s first trip to England. We were looking for a traditional country English pub to stay at. The King Alfred far exceeded our expectations. It’s decor charm ambience lighting service music, all the things that go together to make a place a winner were here. We thoroughly recommend this pub and we would like to come back again and stay longer. we’ve been staying in five star luxury hotels but the King Alfred was a real experience. We will never forget, thank you Staff and management for a great stay.
kind regards, Christopher and Rhonda

A hidden gem in Winchester. Cosy room with some nice touches like real coffee and a mini cafetière. Friendly staff, and the pub itself does great food. The TV was damaged and had a line across the middle, which was a bit annoying, but obviously we didn’t book the hotel for the TV!
Excellent value and a nice place to use as our base for a few days while visiting family.
Really nice 18th century pub with rooms. Lots of nice amenities, expect ally breakfast in room. Bathroom decent, though the shower had no door! Bed was decent but we find it hard to sleep under a comforter even in the cool Britis summer. Parked two nights right in front of pub. Food was quite good.

Cosy rooms above a great pub.
Fabulous location in a very quiet residential area. Literally 5 minute walk into the city centre. Pub is quirky , warm & welcoming. Our room was spacious , very comfortable beds & fabulously clean . We were treated to loads of tea/coffee , yoghurt, delicious granola, muffins & fruit for breakfast..perfect ! Shower was powerful & hot . Wifi good.
Not a complaint but rooms now in need of a little TLC .
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
The hotel was fairly close to the town centre we arrived before the pub was open so couldn't park the car there as you need a on street permit so had to go to the town centre car park. The room was cosy and we had a very nice evening meal we tried their pies, the pub was busy with a good atmosphere only a small criticism was the 10 percentage charge on the bill that put a glass on cheap wine over £9.00.
Lovely Victorian themed pub that offers dinner but not a cooked breakfast. There is a fridge in your room that has a wonderful homemade granola and a jug of milk. There is also a delicious homemade muffin, as thick creamy yoghurt and a satsuma. There are two bottles of spring water and tea and coffee making facilities. The beds are very comfortable and the shower is nice and powerful. There is a TV in the room also. You will be issued with a parking permit if you arrive by car so that you can park in the street. I would definitely stay here again and next time would make use of the restaurant.
We liked:-
- the very individual character of the pub
- proximity to railway station & city centre
- friendly staff
- good quality food (evening meal).
Not so good :-
- our room had a 'dog' smell, particularly noticeable every time we entered the room.
- the lack of a normal breakfast service - no hot food available, and the 'complimentary' snack breakfast had to be eaten in our room, which did not have a dining table or chairs. Surely a breakfast service, even if only continental, could have been provided in the bar area.
The King Alfred Pub is in quiet neighbourhood within an easy 10 minute walk from the train station and an easy 15 minute walk from the city centre, the Cathedral and other attractions. It's a charming pub that serves good pub food and we found our room on the floor above the pub quiet, well appointed, comfortable and in all ways comfortable and convenient. Be advised that the pub is not open before noon and you may have trouble checking in or leaving your bags before that time. The housekeeper was there by 8 am and was happy to keep our bags for the rest of the day on the day we checked out. I would stay there again and highly recommend a room at King Alfred to anyone else.
The location of the King Alfred was difficult to find on the SatNav, as the turnings in the City were very close together and with the volume of traffic, made the turns difficult to action. Once we got the hang of the turns after 3 times round the block, we found the Pub and were greeted by friendly staff.
The accommodation was good for the price, however, there was no shower or shampoo gel and the breakfast offering was poor. We had to ask for more milk as the amount left for us to have a cuppa AND breakfast was woefully short of what was needed. The staff were very friendly though which helped.
A unique and not at all glitzy - it has lots of character. Atop a nice pub. The cathedral and city center are only a few blocks away. Street parking at the front door.
Driving, it seemed to be a long way from the centre, but actually it was a short walk. It’s an old building but well looked after. We would definitely stay here again
Checking in was a little slow because of IT issues. Everything about the stay exceeded expectations. It is a pub, not a five star hotel. Rate was fair. I’d stay there again and would recommend it to anyone.
Lovely old world pub. Well decorated in dark colours. Book lined walls. Cosy leather seats. Great character pub with friendly staff. Please don’t alter it. Great food. Bitter also good. Easy parking.
