From glorious Pacific beaches to colonial cities, soaring volcanoes and the huge Lake Nicaragua, this is the country’s most-loved tourist region.

Discover varied landscapes, colonial history, tribal traditions and thrilling outdoor pursuits in Western Nicaragua. Bask in the sun on pristine beaches, relax at surfer towns and tour ancient colonial cities. Trek to the summit of tall volcanic peaks, spot majestic wildlife at nature reserves and sail to lake islands. Stretching along the nation’s Pacific Ocean coast, Western Nicaragua is an accessible area framed by volcanic landscapes and vast lakes.

Bustling Managua on the banks of Lake Xolotlán is the Nicaraguan capital and main arrival point. Explore the city’s museums, monuments, street art and energetic nightlife districts. Marvel at the restored Spanish-built masterpieces that decorate nearby Granada, a city established in 1523. Browse the galleries and artisan workshops of Masaya and its villages, collectively called the Pueblos Blancos. Find more colonial landmarks and age-old ruins in León.

Go beach hopping and swim in brilliant blue water along the Pacific coast. In the north, Jiquilillo Beach is popular among surfers. Las Peñitas is a gateway for boat and kayak tours on the crocodile-inhabited waters of Isla Juan Venado Natural Reserve. Watch pretty sunsets while riding on horseback at Pochomil and La Boquita. Experience time-honored fishing traditions at Casares and Huehuete.

To the south, San Juan del Sur is a short drive from several beaches. Among these are Playa Maderas, Playa Marsella and El Toro. Observe nesting sea turtles at La Flor Wildlife Refuge.

Inland, Lake Nicaragua offers many outdoor adventures. Challenge the grueling treks to the summits of Concepción Volcano and Maderas Volcano, both located on Ometepe Island. Explore the secluded bays of Zapatera Island. Other popular hikes include trails around Masaya Volcano and San Cristobal Volcano. Cruise on the waterways of the Delta del Estero Real Natural Reserve and observe monkeys and myriad birdlife in Chocoyero-El Brujo Natural Reserve.

Managua’s Augusto C. Sandino International Airport is the principal transportation hub for Nicaragua and Western Nicaragua. This breathtaking region presents a fascinating snapshot of Nicaragua, the Land of Lakes and Volcanoes.
