A holiday in Vordingborg features a well-preserved Medieval tower from what was one of the biggest castles in the country and lots of activities for all ages. The town sits next to the shores of the Storstrøm sound, where there are also lots of opportunities for outdoor activities.
Vordingborg is in the south of Zealand and is believed to have been founded in the early 1100s. But one thing that Vordingborg is known for is that Valdemar the Great built a castle in the townin the 1160s. Because of its location, the town has played a prominent role in Danish history because of commerce and its strategic location during times of war.
Explore the history of Denmark by visiting the ruins of the former Vordingborg Slot and take a closer look at the remaining part of the Gåsetårnet, the town’s landmark. If you follow the outline of the moat, you come to Vor Frue Kirke, dating back to the mid-1400s, with an impressive pulpit. Alongside the castle ruins is the lovely historical botanic garden, founded in 1921 and designed according to the oldest Danish garden book from 1647.
If travelling to Vordingborg with the family, there are lots of fun, family-friendly activities. Danmarks Borgcenter is a fun and informative digital historical centre where visitors can learn about the Middle Ages and all that it entails in terms of kings, battles and power struggles. If you’ve got small kids with you, spend a couple of hours at Farmorhuset, where they can play while you enjoy a cup of coffee.
Getting to Vordingborg by train is easy regardless of which direction you come from, although you may have to change trains. There are also excellent motorway links and a good bus service.
