Less than half an hour from Logroño is the small but nevertheless important town of Viana. This is the last stop on the Navarra stretch of the Saint James' Way, a place where pilgrims can replenish their provisions and recover their strength. The old fountain is the first stop for walkers, an old piped fresh-water construction. From here, after climbing the hill to the Plaza del Coso, a fine town square surrounded by 17th-century baroque buildings, you reach the Church of Santa María. The decorated portal and carved altarpiece of this 13th century Gothic temple make this an essential visit. Outside, under the western portal, lie the remains of Cesare Borgia.
In the Plaza de los Fueros, in front of the church, is the town hall building. Its two towers and seven decorated arches make this an excellent example of baroque architecture. A getaway to Viana is without doubt a good opportunity to continue exploring the history of Navarra, such as the ruins of the Church of San Pedro, which was occupied by Liberal troops during the first Carlist War in the mid-19th century.
Viana's old town centre is a network of narrow cobblestone streets that you will love to wander through. They are lined with old pilgrim hostels, stately mansions and businesses with centuries of tradition. On the outskirts of town are two XII-century buildings are still in very good condition – the hermitages of La Virgen de las Cuevas and San Martín.
