"Thon is the gold standard for chain hotels in Norway, in my experience. Every one I have stayed at over the years has provided a quiet, clean, well-appointed room (most include both a coffee/tea service and a fridge/minibar), an excellent bed with plenty of pillows to choose from, fluffy duvets, and a truly exceptional breakfast buffet. A Thon hotel is a good bet at the beginning or end of a trip, when one has the least reserves to deal with the unexpected, and little patience for quirky charm. Thon Hotel Opera is particularly convenient, being mere steps from the central train station and on several tram/bus routes that will whisk you downtown. The gym was closed for renovation when I visited in June 2026."
