"Had a problem finding the place, parking a bit of a problem during the day. Friendly people, clean rooms and en-suite. Adequate Continental breakfast, with a snack box take away if you feel like snacking later."
"The hosts could not have made us feel more welcome when we arrived. Darren and Karen are a wealth of information about places to go and see, locally and around Scotland. Our room was spotless and very comfortable. Quiet surroundings made our stay very peaceful. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. We will not hesitate to stay here again should we be visiting the area."
"We stayed in the sauna room which was recently refurbished, staff were incredibly rude and inattentive, food was microwaved ready meal at best. The room itself was fine, shower was broken. The sauna was nice although it smelled incredibly unclean. I definitely would not recommend staying here. 0 atmosphere either. Also the hot tub was broken which was not communicated to us until we arrived honestly AVOID."
"How do I describe the island of Colonsay and the Hotel? It is impossible to find the right words. This is an island of incredible beauty, almost dream-like quiet, the most amazing beach ever, it is such a special place. The hotel is an old inn, just up the pier road from the ferry dock, with classic weathered architecture - uneven floorboards, winding stairs, safe timeless feel, but modern in the things that matter - comfortable bed, functional bathroom etc. The screen-less windows open to sea air and birdsong. The restaurant has a decent variety of good, simple food with local ingredients. The bar has local peaty whiskeys and a welcoming atmosphere. One comment - Colonsay is a small island, but it is hilly and the single road is winding. While bringing a car over on the ferry is expensive, it really is the only practical way to see the island, to get up to the stunning Kiloran Bay beach, to bucolic Colony House for lunch in the garden cafe, and down to the Oronsay causeway unless you are a vigorous hiker or biker with lots of time. Don't miss the surprisingly interesting historic museum in an old church up near the beach, and the salmon smokery - most delicious salmon ever. This is not an island with excitement or modern entertainment, but don't neglect to just sit quietly, wee dram in hand, blue sea and green hills in view, and listen to the sheep, birds, and wind. Even if I never go back, a day will not pass that I don't want to be on Colonsay."
"The staff were lovley, they were friendly and couldn't have been more helpful.
The atmosphere was lively, warm and welcoming.
There was a good choice of evening meal and the breakfast menu was also varied and freshly prepared - excellent quality all round especially the coffee!"
"We loved our two nights stay at Melfort House. It was peaceful idyll that restored us somewhat as we were nearing the end of our road trip through Scotland. Matthew is a wonderful host, and we felt welcome in his home. The breakfast offerings were top notch, and our room and bed were so comfortable. The location was perfect for a day trip to nearby Oban, which should not be missed, particularly for the seafood and Oban Distillery tour. Thank you Matthew for the opportunity to stay; we will long remember it."
"Ardfern is a very pretty village and a great springboard to explore Argyll.
The decor is dark but there are tables outside and a great view of the loch from the picnic benches out back.
The bar area has a great feel and a regular stream of sailors from the local marina"
