Tortosa

Travel Guide

Tortosa is often called the city of the three cultures, standing out the remains of Muslim, Jewish and Christian influences.
The highest point in town, Suda Castle, is also a parador - an historical hotel. The view from upthere is awesome.

Prepare for a feast for all five senses, as the gastronomy, vegetation, culture and architecture make a holiday in Tortosa the perfect plan.

Tortosa is a city in Catalonia that is crossed by the river Ebre, just 85 kilometres from Tarragona. It’s home to many tourist attractions here are some ideas to make the most of your cheap trips to Tortosa. For example, in the Jardins del Príncep Gardens you’ll find a calm, peaceful haven. It’s a curious botanical park with a scattered collection of 48 sculptures that take you on a journey through the history of mankind.

Lovers of architecture will certainly enjoy their trips to Tortosa, as they’ll be able to visit the Reials Col·legis and the Renaissance Centre of Interpretation, one of the most important sites of Renaissance monuments in Catalonia. It comprises the Col·legi de Sant Jaume i Sant Maties, the Col·legi de Sant Jordi i Sant Domènec and the church of Sant Domènec. You're sure to fall in love with its patios as you learn more about this revolutionary architectural movement.

Of course, the site par excellence for learning is the Museum of Tortosa, the historical and archaeological centre of the Terres de l’Ebre region. The permanent exhibition explores the history of Tortosa, from prehistory to the 20th century, including the Iberian and Roman periods.

Once you’ve worked up your appetite, you should head over to the town market, a 19th century building next to the River Ebre that is a symbol of the eclectic Catalan architectural style. Here you can enjoy the tasty local cuisine and try an esparedat, a salad sandwich with beans and cod, or coques de sagí, lard cakes that also contain sugar, flour, oil and eggs.

Another example of Catalan architecture, this time of a modernist style, is La Casa Grego, built between 1907 and 1908 with stone, glass and wrought iron. Make the most of its strategic location to go on and explore the lavish Tortosa Cathedral. Admire its Gothic style and enjoy the sun from inside its cloister.

Enjoy all this and more in a city that practically sells itself. See our package deals to Tortosa to make sure you don't miss out.

It should have been so much better. A hotel in an historic building with midetn facilities. The check in staff were friendly, especially the young man who dealt with us, but the process took too long. The staff at reception are very good. Our accommodation was an accessible bungalow which was clean and tidy but has very little storage space or worktops in the kitchen. The shower in the bathroom leaks because there is no seal between the door and the floor. The roads around the campsite are dusty ...
